Art Space Vincennes LLC, 521 Main will open Otherside Visions, paintings by Gwaylon Leaf.  Leaf will be exhibiting colorful calligraphic non-objective acrylic paintings on panels and mylar.

Leaf is an emerging artist whose work embodies multicultural complexity.  Raised in the US, but surrounded by the Taoist philosophy and Chinese art that influenced his father, artist Bill Leaf,

Gwaylon embraces a “sense of otherness that experience with his cultures has granted him.”  His awareness of traditional Chinese art merges with the “aesthetic sensibilities of contemporary western artists such as Cy Twombly and Mark Toby.” Gwaylon Leaf earned his BFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and his MFA degree from the University of Nevada, Reno. He is currently living and working in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Regular gallery hours: Tue – Sat 11 am – 2 pm. Additional hours by appointment; contact the gallery via Facebook.

The Open Gallery 329 Main will open The Faces Behind Peace, Artwork by Fernando Lozano.  Lozano writes this about his work: “Art became my saving grace after the devastating tragedy of losing my son, and it is from that inspiration that I am presenting this series.  The idea to read and research about people who selflessly dedicated their lives to promoting peace and who had won the Nobel Peace Prize was a welcoming subject after finishing the series The Faces of Torture. Their characters surface slowly over the word ‘PEACE’, dictating the colors and composition of the canvas.  It was and still is a subject that I go back to when I need a reaffirmation of humanity, knowing that I am just scratching the surface because there are still so many great humans to know and celebrate.”

The Open Gallery Players will again provide rollicking good Irish music for visitors to enjoy.

Regular gallery hours: Tue, Thu 12 – 5 pm, Sat 11 am – 4 pm, and by chance. 812- 881-6475

Northwest Territory Art Guild, 316 Main will open two one-person exhibitions.  Photographs by Matt Ramsey will be presented in a show titled the Little Woods on the Wabash: a Celebration of the Landscapes of Ouabache Trails Park.  The result of a four-year project, the exhibition is an all-seasons collection of woodland landscape photography highlighting the unique riparian environment of the Wabash River forest corridor in Knox County.  Work ranges from film to digital, in art paper and metal presentation, in editions from one to five.  20% of First Friday sales are committed to supporting park improvements.  More information at Ramsey’s website.

Matt returned home to Vincennes from Naval service in 2018.  Since then he has been completing a BA at Indiana State University and building a fine art photography practice and business. He participated in the On-Ramp Creative Entrepreneurship Accelerator Program for Working Artists sponsored by the Indiana Arts Commission and has been working with Pantheon Theater services to develop a new venture, “Opti-Viz Media”.

Victoria Kramer’s exhibition Spirit of Collaboration will present ceramic works featuring raku glazes, which produce earthy colors and surface textures. Victoria, a graduate of the University of Evansville, lives outside of Vincennes.  She considers herself a groundskeeper and potter.  She states: “It is the act of doing and to keep moving that drives me forward.  It is an exciting act to pull the wares from the flames of fire to see the results that the spiritual forces influence has deposited on the completed ware.

In this exhibition, Victoria has collaborated with her sister-in-law, Susan Vieck, a floral designer and Master Gardner, with many years of experience.  Susan has created floral arrangements that harmonize with the pottery. Victoria states: “Our work is simply a statement of working in tandem with people and natural elements to augment the presentation of the wares.  Susan has an innate and speedy way to pull the natural elements together.”

Work by Guild members will also be on display and for sale.

The Vincennes public and visitors to our community can now view nine new outdoor sculptures added over the last year to the group of seven that inaugurated this three-year project. The new sculptures are located in several sites: Gregg Park, the Vincennes University Campus, Fireman’s Park, and the Vincennes Knox County Visitors and Tourism Bureau.

This spring, to celebrate the new sculptures, the Public Sculpture Project is offering a series of early Friday evening art discussions guided by Art Space Vincennes gallery director Adny Jendrzejewski.

The second discussion will happen at the Vincennes University campus on Friday, May 27th at 5:30 pm. Those wishing to participate are invited to meet at the Art and Design Center building near the corner of 2nd and College. The walk will start with the sculpture at that site, Twisted Botanical Wave. Next will be Hobbe’s Claw Unleashed, in the park next to the Beckes Student Union building across College Avenue. Following will be Abstract 29 at the LRC (library) entrance, and Elli 3 near the Administration Building. The discussion is expected to last one hour.

All sites are wheelchair/scooter accessible. There will be no seating available, so visitors who have difficulty standing for a sustained period may want to bring lawn chairs. If it rains, the talk will be postponed to the following evening, Saturday, May 28th at 5:30 pm. Updates will be available on the Art Space Vincennes and 1st City Public Sculpture Project Facebook pages.

In June, the sculptures at Fireman’s Park, the Knox County Visitors and Tourism Bureau, and 3rd and Main Streets will be the evening’s focus. Revisiting the sculptures on Culbertson Boulevard sited in 2020 will be the focus of another evening’s discussion.

The exhibit as a whole is a study of how the abstract idea of utopia, interpreted so differently across the spectrum of human thought, is expressed in the architecture itself and through Rowe’s careful selection of vantage points and his sensitivity to the impact of momentary changes in light.

The Open Gallery

The Open Gallery 329 Main will present March for the Common Good, an exhibition of themed posters by Vincennes University Professor Pravin Sevak’s Art and Design students. In these students’ two years of study, Professor Sevak encourages the design of at least one project that addresses issues regarding social or common good.  This exhibition offers a special opportunity for viewers to see a selection of some of the best examples of such works done over the past 14 years.  Subjects include concerns relating to the environment, social problems, food, diet and other health-related topics. It is hoped that the young voices heard through these colorful posters will impact our perspectives for the common good of our community, both locally and more broadly.

Regular gallery hours: Tue, Thu 12 – 5 pm, Sat 11 am – 4 pm and by chance. 812- 881-6475

Shircliff Gallery

The Shircliff Gallery First and Harrison Streets, will be exhibiting Libby Rowe – Like Panes of Glass, photo-based wall pieces. Rowe earned her BFA from the University of Northern Iowa and MFA from Syracuse University.  She lives and works in San Antonio, Texas.  Rowe’s work addresses the disjunction between the idealization and the reality of the American Dream of family life.  Images from family albums are printed onto stencil-created shaped grounds based on familiar domestic items such as a lawn chair, a laundry basket, a sock monkey.  As the stenciled shapes are cut out, parts of the photo image disappear.  As Rowe states, “neither the memory nor the present can possibly conform to an ideal without fracturing”.

Regular gallery hours: weekdays 9 am – 5 pm. The gallery will extend hours on March 4 to 7 pm. 812-888-4316.

March 4, 2022 @ 5:00 pm March 25, 2022 @ 8:00 pm

The Open Gallery welcomes Professor Pravin Sevak, Art and Design department of Vincennes University, to exhibit his former students’ classroom projects titled – March for Common Good.

Professor Sevak will soon be retiring and The Open Gallery is honored to do a retrospective of his many successes with his Art and Design students over the last fourteen years.  During the two years of their study, Sevak has always encouraged his students to design at least one project that addresses design for social good/common good.

These designs not only reflect the talent, creativity, and passion within the student body, but aim to challenge perceptions of their chosen issues. Hopefully, the voices of these graphic design students are heard and will impact your perspective for the common good of our community, both locally and globally. The exhibition is family-friendly and will provide plenty of discussion about important issues that the artwork is representing.

A First Friday reception will be held on Friday, March 4 from 5-8 p.m.  Patrons are encouraged to mask as they feel comfortable doing so.  The exhibition will run through the month of March.  Free and open to the public.
