Spooky season is here and our October calendar is jam-packed with events! Fall is also the perfect time to go out and be with your family. Keep reading to see all of the family-friendly events happening this October!
Main Street will be open to foot traffic only for the crowd to enjoy a beautiful evening downtown. Those 21 and over can enjoy artisan beer and wine tasting, food vendors, music by local artists, and tours of the historic Pantheon Theatre now repurposed into a co-working and business incubator. The downtown art galleries, Art Space, Open Gallery, and the Northwest Territory Art Guild, will be open with new exhibits.
Spring is here and better weather is just around the corner! There are many things to do in Knox County year-round, but here are a few of our favorite things to do in Knox County during the Spring.
Don’t miss out on this awesome night happening on Main Street! Shop some of Knox County’s best locally-owned boutiques and small businesses during their extended hours on Friday, March 11th.
Join friends at three downtown galleries and Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery for the First Friday Art Walk, December 3. Downtown galleries will be open from 5 – 8 pm. Shircliff Gallery will have a closing event for their current exhibit from 6 – 7:35.
Art Space Vincennes LLC, LLC 521 Main will offer a final chance to view Ellipsis…Ellipses: Painting by Tom Dimond. This South Carolina artist is showing mixed media works conceptually based on the ellipsis, punctuation of three dots standing for an omission in writing occurring without substantially changing content. Layers of paint, photo transfers, and texture applications reverberate with energy and conflict, reflecting past and present-day turbulence.
Mask required for entry. The Gallery will be closed for the season after this First Friday. Watch the ASV Facebook page for what will be happening in 2022.
Northwest Territory Art Guild, 316 Main will have Christmas and winter-themed artworks and craft items on display and for sale. There will also be a wall of flower-subject paintings and drawings. The gallery will be decorated for the holidays. The gallery will close as usual for January and February.

The Open Gallery 329 Main will continue A Room Full of Whimsy, gallery co-owner Mike Mullen’s Squeaky Toy Variations series, and ceramic works by Abby Peacock. A few other surprises will be added. In Mullen’s series, as in traditional still-life painting and photography, symbolism is conveyed through artful arrangement of a vast collection of old but still colorful plastic squeaky toys. His work is unique, fun, and provocative. Peacock explores ideas about communication, language, and social interaction in atmospherically fired porcelain with underglaze designs. She is currently pursuing her MFA at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. The First Friday Players will again provide rollicking good Irish music for visitors to enjoy. The exhibition is family-friendly; however, guests will be requested to mask up.

The Shircliff Gallery, located at First and Harrison Streets, offers a final opportunity for seeing Naturally Synthetic, works by Elissa Cox Wenthe and Laura Gleissner. Cox Wenthe is showing ceramic sculpture based on real and imagined landscape sources that exude energy, vitality, rawness, beauty or sublime decadence. She holds an MFA from Ohio University, Athens and lives, and works in Fayetteville, Iowa. Laura Gleissner is showing oil paintings based on design elements at play in architectural structures. She investigates perception and visual distortion as her works evolve into ambiguous abstractions. Gleissner holds an MFA in Painting from Northern Illinois University and is currently Assistant Professor of Art at Upper Iowa University, Fayette. Closing reception is Friday, December 3, 6 – 7:35 p.m.

Art Space Vincennes and the Open Gallery will not be offering refreshments. Viewers are reminded that all the galleries have open hours during the week, and the safety of seeing the work in small groups, rather than in a crowd, is a viable option.
The three downtown galleries, now joined by the Shircliff Gallery on the Vincennes University campus are moving into the Fall season with new shows. Join your friends at each gallery during the First Friday Art Walk on October 1, 5 – 8 pm.
Art Space Vincennes LLC, LLC 521 Main will open Ellipsis…Ellipses: Painting by Tom Dimond. The nonverbal action of the paint and visual structures, including references to Americana, creates a sense of visceral anxiety, calling to mind the Abstract Expressionist and Pop artists of the ’50s and ’60s. They reverberate with that kind of energy and conflict, reflecting present-day turbulence and frustrations.
Gallery hours are extended for October to provide more opportunities for viewers to see the work singly or in small groups throughout the month. Regular hours will be Tue – Thu noon – 5, Fri noon – 7 and Sat noon – 5. The gallery requires wearing a mask due to the COVID-19 d-variant.
Northwest Territory Art Guild, 316 Main will host their annual Members’ Juried Exhibition. Members are invited to submit up to 3 entries of original works completed within the last 3 years and not previously entered in this annual juried show. Categories include 3-dimensional media, photography, works on paper, and works on canvas. Monetary awards are given for the juror’s designation of Best of Show, First, Second, and Third Place in each category, and honorable mentions. Works in a variety of media by Guild members will also be on display and for sale.

The Open Gallery 329 Main will present Squeaky Toy Variations, the latest series of photographs by gallery co-owner Michael Mullen. Mullen notes that the series, like traditional still life painting and photography, is “rife with symbolism” conveyed through an artful arrangement of his vast collection of old but still colorful plastic squeaky toys. He states: “Since I am using a limited language exploring a limited number of themes, I’ve found it interesting to explore these issues by rearranging the language. So, this is not a single knock on the door, but a continued pounding. ‘Look! Pay attention! How many times do I have to say this?’” As always, Mullen’s work is unique and fun but also provocative.

The Shircliff Gallery will present an exhibition of works by Nathan Meltz titled:
That’s great, it starts with an earthquake
Birds and snakes and aeroplanes
And Lenny Bruce is not afraid The large-format screen-prints and screen-printed sculptures comprising his current body of work explore the role of technology in the natural ecosystem. He questions how the built environment is changing our ecosystem and who benefits from these changes. He states, “I create narratives and relationships between mechanical humanoids and automated animals…through these tales of love, violence, and circuit boards, I alert the viewer to the inevitable robot invasion and prepare them to resist.” Gallery hours have not been announced but should be open during weekdays from about 9 – 5.
First Friday participants are strongly urged to wear masks in the gallery indoor spaces. The galleries will not be offering refreshments.
