During the months of September and October, The Open Gallery will welcome photographer Christopher Schneberger to exhibit his award-winning series titled, The Wanderers. This series takes the viewers on a twilight journey with young explorers that is at once contemplative, worrisome, dreamlike, and arresting.  Are they really exploring or are they lost?  Where do they want to go?  What do they hope to find?  What becomes of them?  Schneberger leaves us with this notion:  “This series is in some ways my own processing of being lost and finding my way, and gaining an appreciation of getting lost as a deliberate act.”   We hope you will come and take the journey for yourself.

Christopher Schneberger is an Assistant Professor of Art at Vincennes University and is director for the gallery at Shircliff Humanities Center.  Come welcome him to The Open Gallery this Friday, September 1 from 5 -8 p.m.  Light refreshments and live music will make it a festive evening.

Spring Forward

April First Friday Art Walk 2022

Join friends at three downtown galleries and Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery for the First Friday Art Walk, April 1.  Downtown galleries and a new venue, the Democratic Headquarters on Main Street, will be open 5 – 8 pm.  Shircliff Gallery will be open until 8.

Art Space Vincennes LLC, 521 Main will continue Lumiére Horizon, photographs by Erick Rowe. Rowe taught photography at Vincennes University from 2007 – 2009 before moving to the Chicago area.  He now teaches photography courses at the College of Lake County in Grayslake IL.  He earned his BA at Purdue University and MFA at Columbia College. The exhibit as a whole is a study of how the abstract idea of utopia, interpreted so differently across the spectrum of human thought, is expressed both in the architecture Rowe photographs and through his careful selection of vantage points and sensitivity to the impact of momentary changes in light. Erick Rowe will be present at the First Friday opening to talk with visitors to the gallery.

Regular gallery hours: Tue – Sat Noon – 5 pm.  Other hours by appointment; call 812-887-6145

Northwest Territory Art Guild, 316 Main will show works by the Green Door Watercolor Painters group.  These area artists meet weekly to paint together at the Nancy Ford Green Door studio in Bruceville.  A variety of subjects and approaches to the use of the watercolor medium will be seen in their artworks. New spring and summer-themed work by Guild members will also be on display and for sale. The Guild has a display of sunflower works in the front window to honor Ukraine.

Regular gallery hours: Tue – Sat 11 am – 2 pm. Additional hours by appointment; contact the gallery via Facebook.

The Open Gallery 329 Main presents Open for Common Good, a retrospective exhibition of poster design work by Vincennes University Professor Pravin Sevak. Professor Sevak will retire from teaching in May and will be leaving our community. This exhibition highlights his brilliant career in the design field, offering a chance to celebrate and express appreciation for his work as an educator and artist. Sevak’s works are tightly composed, masterful in their simplicity, and powerful in the interconnections of design elements.  He writes: “Each aspect of a composition is significant, significant enough to carry the entire weight of the message. Every visual element is considered both independently and compositionally to achieve aesthetics in the final design.”  Professor Sevak will be present during the reception to discuss his work with gallery visitors.

Regular gallery hours: Tue, Thu 12 – 5 pm, Sat 11 am – 4 pm and by chance. 812- 881-6475

The Shircliff Gallery First and Harrison Streets, is presently hosting the Knox County High Schools Student Art Exhibition.  Art students from North Knox, South Knox, and Lincoln High Schools are exhibiting works selected by their instructors.  Juried awards in several categories were presented at a public reception on March 29th.

The Open Gallery will show recent work by photographer Michael Mullen during the month of October.  Mullen’s latest series is titled, “Squeaky Toy Variations” and is a series that Mullen says, like traditional still life painting and photography, is “rife with symbolism” through an artful arrangement of his vast collection of old but colorful plastic squeaky toys. He says this about the project: “ Since I am using a limited language exploring a limited number of themes, I’ve found it interesting to explore these issues by rearranging the language. So, this is not a single knock on the door, but a continued pounding. ‘Look! Pay attention! How many times do I have to say this?'” As always, Mullen’s work is unique and fun but provocative, giving viewers lots to talk about and many opportunities to reminisce.

The opening reception will be during the First Friday Art Walk on Friday, October 1, from 5-8 p.m. and will include live music by the First Friday Players who will as per their usual, provide us with rollicking good Irish music to enjoy.  The exhibition is family-friendly and open to the public; however, guests will be asked to mask up.
