First Friday

March 4, 2022 @ 5:00 pm 8:00 pm

Join friends at three downtown galleries and Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery for the First Friday Art Walk, March 4.  Downtown galleries will be open 5 – 8 pm.  Shircliff Gallery will be open until 7.

Art Space Vincennes, LLC

Art Space Vincennes LLC,  521 Main will open Lumiére Horizon, photographs by Erick Rowe. Rowe taught photography at Vincennes University from 2007 – 2009 before moving to the Chicago area.  He now teaches photography courses at the College of Lake County in Grayslake IL.  He earned his BA at Purdue University and MFA at Columbia College.  Rowe’s subject of focus is architecture, i.e., buildings and their surrounding spaces. The exhibit as a whole is a study of how the abstract idea of utopia, interpreted so differently across the spectrum of human thought, is expressed in the architecture itself and through Rowe’s careful selection of vantage points and his sensitivity to the impact of momentary changes in light.

Regular gallery hours: Tue – Sat Noon – 5 pm.  Additional hours by appointment; call 812-887-6145

Northwest Territory Art Guild

Northwest Territory Art Guild, 316 Main will welcome the spring season with Marsh Madness, photographs by Sullivan, Indiana artist John Adams.  Appropriate to the season, these are birds and other wildlife subjects, many from the Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area in Greene County.  Included are images of the camouflaged boat from which his images are taken. New spring and summer-themed work by Guild members will also be on display and for sale.

Regular gallery hours: Tue – Sat 11 am – 2 pm. Additional hours by appointment; contact the gallery via Facebook.

The Open Gallery

The Open Gallery 329 Main will present March for the Common Good, an exhibition of themed posters by Vincennes University Professor Pravin Sevak’s Art and Design students. In these students’ two years of study, Professor Sevak encourages the design of at least one project that addresses issues regarding social or common good.  This exhibition offers a special opportunity for viewers to see a selection of some of the best examples of such works done over the past 14 years.  Subjects include concerns relating to the environment, social problems, food, diet and other health-related topics. It is hoped that the young voices heard through these colorful posters will impact our perspectives for the common good of our community, both locally and more broadly.

Regular gallery hours: Tue, Thu 12 – 5 pm, Sat 11 am – 4 pm and by chance. 812- 881-6475

Shircliff Gallery

The Shircliff Gallery First and Harrison Streets, will be exhibiting Libby Rowe – Like Panes of Glass, photo-based wall pieces. Rowe earned her BFA from the University of Northern Iowa and MFA from Syracuse University.  She lives and works in San Antonio, Texas.  Rowe’s work addresses the disjunction between the idealization and the reality of the American Dream of family life.  Images from family albums are printed onto stencil-created shaped grounds based on familiar domestic items such as a lawn chair, a laundry basket, a sock monkey.  As the stenciled shapes are cut out, parts of the photo image disappear.  As Rowe states, “neither the memory nor the present can possibly conform to an ideal without fracturing”.

Regular gallery hours: weekdays 9 am – 5 pm. The gallery will extend hours on March 4 to 7 pm. 812-888-4316.
