This coming weekend Labor Day celebrations will be taking place all over the country. For many of us, this means barbeques, picnics, spending time with family and friends, and the end of summer. However, many of us don’t know how or why we actually celebrate Labor Day.
During the height of the Industrial Revolution, labor unions began organizing strikes and rallies to protest poor working conditions and to renegotiate pay. As a result, the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, New York when 10,000 workers took unpaid time off to march from City Hall to Union Square—holding the first Labor Day parade in United States History (Source: History). Shortly thereafter, the idea of a working person’s holiday caught on, and multiple municipal ordinances were passed not long after.
Here in Knox County many of us will be celebrating similarly to how the first Labor Day celebrations were; with food, parades, and spending time with those we care about. But if you are looking for more to do this holiday weekend, there are plenty of events and celebrations occurring locally that you can partake in.
