First Friday Art Walk

August 6, 2021 @ 5:00 pm 8:00 pm

All three downtown galleries are ending the summer season with local people in August.

Join them at each gallery during the First Friday Art Walk August 6, 5 – 8 pm.  This First Friday coincides with the Watermelon Festival on Patrick Henry Drive.

Art Space Vincennes LLC, LLC 521 Main will open Nuances, non-objective works by Amy DeLap in her first one-person exhibition at the gallery since it opened in 2013. Like a musician’s construction of phrases with strings of notes, in these pieces stories and ideas are created with visual elements: color, value, line, shape, space and texture using a variety of media, and processes, often in grid patterns.  A little time with each piece generates magical experiences that might take you by surprise through shifting perceptions, coincidences, humor, and even philosophical implications.

Gallery hours are extended for August so that viewers choosing not to attend First Friday due to pandemic concerns can see the work singly or in small groups throughout the month.  Regular hours will be Tue – Fri noon – 7 and Sat noon – 5.  The gallery asks that you a wear a mask to enter due to the “D-Variant”.

Northwest Territory Art Guild, 316 Main will show work by Bill Meyer, including new pieces in both watercolor and pastel.  Bill had a long career teaching art at South Knox High School and came out of retirement recently to teach in the Art Department at Vincennes University.  He has been a regular participant at the Green Door studio and has been a major supporter of the Art Guild.  His help was essential in the move into the Guild’s new space, and he volunteers weekly to keep the gallery open.  Bill’s subjects are often landscapes seen in SW Indiana and in his travels.  He is an accomplished watercolor painter, working in a realistic, regionalist style. Other guild members will also have works for sale in the gallery shop.

Regular gallery hours: Tue – Sat 11 am – 2 pm.  Additional hours by appointment.

The Open Gallery 329 Main will present Saying What No One is Thinking, the latest paintings of Sarah Wolfe, during August and September. The show is an exploration of new ideas and techniques that are both colorful and compelling. She gleans elements from the natural world into sculptural pieces, anatomical works and abstractions in an effort to translate environmental anxiety and reproductive frailties. While seemingly disparate, these works are part of a continuum of internalizing the external and externalizations of the internal. As part of Friday’s opening, the gallery welcomes a new musical combo, Buck Rogers Clark, which includes Wolfe’s husband Trevor Murry, so Friday evening will be a family affair of the arts!

Regular gallery hours: Tue, Thu 12 – 7 pm., Sat 11 am – 2 pm.

With the more contagious Covid 19 “D-Variant” in Knox County and rapid increase of infections, First Friday participants are strongly urged to wear masks in the gallery indoor spaces. The galleries will not be offering refreshments.  Viewers are reminded that all the galleries have open hours during the week, and the safety of seeing the work in small groups rather than a crowd is a viable option.
